ZIB is in close vicinity to the scientific institutes of the Free University of Berlin. The surrounding area is composed of university buildings within a park-like landscape and 19th century villas. The buildings are between two and four stories high.
The outward form of the building is based the above-mentioned design contest, which called for a campus-like square to be built by the two buildings (ZIB and the FU Institute of Computer Science).
A special feature of this context was the demand for visual openness towards the Lenné Park of the Technische Fachhochschule Berlin.
The building is composed of a round-shaped and an oblong part, which are both three stories high. The round wing of the building has a glass-built middle, thus creating the visual openness between campus and Lenné Park. Round and oblong wing are connected by a glass-built bridge that yields the access road between Altensteinstraße and the campus.
The facade is made of white concrete bricks combined with tilings of steel glass, representing a common context with the the FU Computer Science building (grey glazed clinker).
The roof of the round wing has been designed as an extensive roof garden.
The entire building has been designed in full compliance with the needs of disabled persons. There is no difference of level within the single floors and the toilets for disabled persons are integrated into the overall sanitary facilities.
